What is a Mayhaw?
The name “Mayhaw” comes from the month of May when they are harvested, with “haw” being short for “Hawthorne” berry.
Native to the southeastern United States, particularly in swampy areas, mayhaws are usually red or yellow when ripe and have a tart flavor. The harvesting season lasts only three weeks, making it an intense and fast-paced endeavor. Resembling a pink cranberry, Wild Mayhaw berries produce some of the finest jelly in the world. Their delicate flavor is reminiscent of apple (as mayhaws belong to the apple family) but with a delightful “zing” that lingers on your palate.
Mayhaw jelly, in particular, is a regional delicacy in parts of the South, prized for its distinctive flavor and often enjoyed on toast, bagels, and hot buttered biscuits or as a glaze for meats. In short, we love it on just about everything!

Mayhaw done right
I always buy Striplings Mayhaw jelly. Sometimes I buy a case. The jelly is not watered down like many other brands. If you never tried Mayhaw, you are in for a treat.
